6. Brief historic summary of the Independence Palace:
In 1858, French Colonialists attacked Da Nang Province in the middle of Vietnam to invade Vietnam, starting the war. In 1867, the French had occupied six provinces of the South. In 1868, the French Government started to have a Palace built at the center of Saigon. The Palace was started constructing on Feb. 23, 1868 and completed in 1871. From 1871 to 1887, the Palace was called the Governor General’s Palace of the South Part. The palace's name was NORODOM’s Palace.

From 1887 to 1945, the building was used by many French Governors General as a residing and working place.

On March 9, 1945, Japanese fascists’ revolution occupied Indochina, Norodom’s Palace then became the working place of the Japanese Government in Vietnam. From Sept. 1945, the fascists failed in the World War II, Norodom’s Palace was returned to the French.

In 1954, the French Colonialists withdrew from Vietnam. The American invaded the South, Vietnam was divided into 2 regions, the North was under the regime of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam, while the South was of the Republic of Vietnam. Saigon ruling representative-Prime Minister Ngo Dinh Diem changed the Norodom's Palace to the Palace of Independence. Since then it became the residence of Ngo Dinh Diem's family.

On Feb. 27, 1962, Nguyen Van Cu and Pham Phu Quoc of the overthrowing side driving 2 AD6 bombing planes collapsed the whole main part of the Palace left wing. The Palace could not be restored. Ngo Dinh Diem, however, decided to have a new building built right on the former ground.

Ngo Dinh Diem was killed on Nov. 02, 1963 by the overthrowing side. Nguyen Van Thieu was the one who lived in the Independence Palace the longest from October 1967 to April 21, 1975.

With historical Ho Chi Minh City campaign, at 10.45h of April 30, 1975, a tank number 843 of the liberation army struck the side gate of the Independence Palace, and a tank with the number 390 knocked the main gate, entering advancingly to the Palace. The people of 2 seperated regions have been reunited in one home. Vietnamese people successfully won.

Today, the Palace of Independence has the name of Reunification Palace. It becomes a well-known cultural historical relic which is visited by a very large number of foreign and Vietnamese tourists.
