1. Control mosquito population growth
The first thing you should do to prevent mosquito bites is to reduce or diminish mosquito population in the area you are living. Mosquitoes lay their eggs on water, so you should make sure that there is no ideal habitat for them around and inside your house. For example, discarded containers, fountain, swimming pool, draining pipes, tree holes, and so on are good environment for mosquitoes to complete their life cycle; therefore, you should get rid of these water sources around your house. Remember to replace water in your flowers vases regularly because if you forget doing it for a long time, you will see mosquito larvae there. You also should cut glass as often as possible because grass in garden can be an ideal place for mosquitoes and other insects to hide.
2. Use mosquito nets
Mosquitoes (female ones) usually leave their hidden place to find “preys” at night. Therefore, when you are sleeping without any protection, they will attack you. In this case, you should use mosquito nets. Make sure that when sleeping, the net covers your bed completely and does not reach your skin directly or have any holes on it because mosquitoes will not miss the chance to pass the net and bite you. There is insecticide – treated nets which are applied insecticides designed to kill mosquitoes. They can protect you against mosquitoes more effectively. Do not forget to re-impregnate the nets with those chemical substances every six months.
3. Apply mosquito repellents
It is the easiest way to prevent mosquito bites because you can find mosquito repellents at any drugstores. Repellents are made from some substances that can keep mosquitoes from you for a period of time. It does not kill mosquitoes, but makes humans unattractive to them. They can be natural or artificial. Apply them to your skin or your clothes, no mosquitoes will approach you; remember that these substances cannot last for a long time; reapply it when necessary. However, in each commercial repellent contains 5-25% DEET (diethyl-meta-toluamide), which can badly affect humans’ health, especially children’s. According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), using the products combining DEET and sunscreen is not recommended. Therefore, you should be careful when using these repellents. It is better to use “natural products” which contain essential oils distilled from plants.
4. Grow plants that can prevent moquitoes
There are some kinds of plants that can keep mosquitoes away you. For example, citronella, marigolds, catnip, horsemint, ageratum, herbs, etc. can produce smells making mosquitoes uncomfortable. You can grow them inside or around your house, depending on each kind of plant. It is a natural method that cannot cause any hazards to your health.
5. Use mosquito coils
Like mosquito repellents, mosquito coils contain some substance that can keep mosquitoes away from the area you use coils. Burn them and put them at the place you think there might be mosquitoes. Mosquito coils is an inexpensive and easy-to-use method. However, you should be careful when using them because if not, your house may catch fire. It is also uncomfortable when smelling the smoke generated from them or when you have to clean the ash afterwards.
6. Make your whole house clean and light
Mosquitoes also favor hiding in dark corners. Therefore, you should clean your house regularly, especially in the dark corners. Get rid of unused things in your house because they can be good habitats for mosquitoes. Mosquitoes do not like light as well. You should open windows in daytime to make sure they cannot leave their hidden place to attack you; and remember to close those open windows when night comes because outside mosquitoes can enter through them.
